CBA – Competition Format 2008
Introductory Pairs
• Open to players holding fewer than 5000 local points
• A three session event
Introductory Pairs Qualifying Rounds (Played at Clubs)
• Sessions may be run as part of the normal club session
• Entry is £1 per player (£2 per pair). Clubs using a general session to give
pairs an
opportunity to qualify should ascertain entry prior to starting
• Immediately after the session the ranking list and payment of £2 per
participating pair
should be sent to Darren Evetts. An emailed ranking list and subsequent cheque
in post
is fine. If you have run this as part of a normal session please delete
non-participating
pairs
• The CLOSING DATE for submission of results is Wednesday 18 October 2008.
Clubs
will be notified of qualification numbers by Monday 23 October. It is the
participating
club's responsibility to ensure results are received – numbers may be telephoned
through
to Darren if necessary.
• Any vacancies arising in the semi-final should be filled from the local heat
• Non qualifiers are eligible to play in the Swiss Pairs event
• Prizes: The winning pair (only the winning pair) from each heat will
receive free entry to
the Semi-Final
• Masterpoints: Club awards if awarded locally
Introductory Pairs Semi‐Final (Wednesday 5 November 2008) @ West Midlands BC
• The size of the semi-final will depend on the size of original entry but it is
anticipate being
18 pairs (9 tables) from across all heats if numbers so dictate this will be
increased to 26
pairs (13 tables)
• Any vacancies should be filled from the club heat – any vacancies arising on
the night
may be filled by a random draw of any available non-qualifiers
• Random draw for seats (unless the TD instructs otherwise)
• A switched Mitchell will be played with 27 (or 26) boards
o 27 boards (9x3 board rounds) - final round will be arrow-switched
o 26 boards (13x2 board rounds) - final two rounds will be arrow-switched
• The top 10 pairs will qualify for the final
• Non‐Qualifiers will join the Swiss Pairs and be assigned VP scores as follows:
o 36VPs for the top third of the non-qualifiers
o 32VPs for the middle third of the non-qualifiers
o 28VPs for the bottom third of the non-qualifiers
• Prizes: The winning pair from each heat will receive free entry to the
Semi-Final
• Masterpoints: Club awards if awarded locally
Introductory Pairs Final (Wednesday 3 December 2008) @ West Midlands BC
• Any vacancies will be filled using available pairs from the qualifier in
ranking order (ie the
highest available pair first)
• Random draw for seats (unless the TD instructs otherwise)
• 5 Table Full Howell will be played with 27 boards
• Prizes awarded to 1st, 2nd and 3rd Place and Highest Ranked Pair below Club

Swiss Pairs
(Matches 1–4 Wednesday 5 November & Matches 5–8 Wednesday 3 December 2008)
• This is an open event (ie pairs may enter on the first evening even though
they have not
competed in the Championship Qualifier)
• 8 x 6 Board Matches played overall
• Current Round Assignments
• Random draw for seats (unless the TD instructs otherwise)
• Unless otherwise notified it is assumed that all pairs failing to qualify for
the finals will
play in the Swiss
• In match 5 Incoming pairs from the Championship will be assigned alongside the
current
Swiss ranking so that the leader of the Swiss plays the highest ranked incoming
pair etc.
Then any incoming pairs from the Introductory will be assigned to the bottom of
the
Swiss list and if necessary, then together
• Prizes awarded to 1st and 2nd Place and Highest Ranked Pairs below Regional
Master*
• Masterpoints: County
General Conditions
Unless otherwise stated table money for all sessions will be £4 per player per
session
* Prizes are awarded to overall places and within certain categories (eg below
Life Master)
where sufficient competing pairs exist (ie no prize will be awarded if only one
pair is eligible)
The Tournament Director is empowered to over-ride any of the conditions
contained above in
order to allow for the fair and sensible running of the event(s)
